Social Commitment
To understand the needs of different cultures that are prevalent in our society and to assist these cultures appropriately. To this end, we conducted a survey in 1992 and drew up a mini thesis which serves as our bible on low income community housing in an urban environment.

James Mbongwa was appointed to construct the Thembalihle School in Kwa-Zulu Natal. James was a small, relatively inexperienced builder but with great potential. In recognition of this potential, he was appointed as the main contractor. While this appointment required considerably more time and effort to be spent on project supervision by our architectural company, the reward of knowing that we were helping James and making a meaningful contribution towards the upliftment of previously disadvantaged people outweighed the added sacrifices.

The client, Independent Development Trust (IDT), insisted on 10% sweat equity towards the school building projects. Prakasen Govender, as an associate architect with AFA Architects, was extensively involved in setting up labour intensive community projects such as landscaping, terracing of external works, general brickwork, and involvement of the community in water delivery services to the builders, site protection and security. |
